Specializing in fifes, flutes, and piccolos, Kevin Douglas Jones uses exotic woods Cocobolo and Purpleheart specially seasoned and treated with natural oils (Linseed, Orange, Almond) and shellac. Each instrument is cut on a wood lathe and fitted with either Brass or 925 Sterling Silver ferrules and Delrin or Solid Brass tenons. All KDJ flutes are conical bore instruments (vs. cylindrical bore), making each flute very strong in the lower ranges.
Besides offering the popular keyless Irish flute in the key of D, other instruments include the KDJ Baroque Flute, Fife in C, Flute in D, Piccolo in D, and my favorite, the Van Eyck Renaissance Descant g’ Flute Reproduction. The pure tone of this mellow flute played in the dedicated hands of its maker brought me back to a time of chivalry and green lands of tranquility.
Just as Kevins handmade instruments prove him a seriously talented craftsman, his experienced presence and eagerness to share serves as a welcome gateway into a vast musical world still very much alive in the old ways.
